My first experience with indigo dyeing was at an atelier in Amami Ōshima.
It was there that I learned the technique of shibori for the first time.
To create patterns, we carefully wrapped fabric with strings and rubber bands—some designs took hours, even days, of patient work.
Shibori, one of Japan’s traditional crafts, is a process that demands both time and quiet focus.
The fabric was dipped again and again into the indigo vat, each layer deepening the color.
And when the threads were finally untied, revealing the patterns beneath, that moment—seeing how the colors had bloomed—was pure excitement.
I still remember that feeling vividly today.
初めて藍染めを体験したのは、奄美大島のある工房でした。
そこで、初めて絞りの技法を教わりました。
模様をつくるために、生地に紐やゴムを丁寧に巻きつけていくのですが、模様によっては驚くほど時間がかかります。
もちろん、絞りは日本の伝統工芸のひとつであり、その根気のいる作業には、気が遠くなるほどの時間が必要です。
生地を藍の液に何度も浸しては、少しずつ色を重ね、深みを出していきます。
そして最後に絞り糸をほどき、布を広げた瞬間に現れる色や模様を見るのが、何よりの楽しみでした。
その瞬間のわくわくした気持ちは、今でもはっきりと覚えています。
I feel lucky that around my home, indigo plants — Indigofera suffruticosa — grow freely in the wild.
It is said that indigo was once introduced to the islands and, over time, found its own way to thrive in Hawai‘i’s warm climate.
Sometimes I spot the familiar leaves along the roadside, on red soil slopes, or in places where the wind seems to rest for a while.
The plant itself is resilient — it takes root even in dry earth and quietly returns with the rain.
Watching it, I feel as though the memory of dye still lingers gently within this island.
When I pick a few leaves and Letting the indigo oxidize, a light turquoise and tender blue appears —
a hue that feels touched by the wind and light of this place.
It has become a special shade for me, one that holds both time and soil within it.
ラッキーなことに、私の家のまわりには、インド藍（Indigofera suffruticosa）の植物がいくつも生えています。
ハワイでは、かつて藍が持ち込まれ、その後、島のあたたかい気候の中で野生化したといわれています。
道の端や赤土の斜面、風の通り道のような場所に、ふとその葉の形と色を見つけることがあります。
植物としてのインド藍はとてもたくましく、乾いた土地でも根を張り、季節の雨を受けてまた芽吹きます。
そんな姿を見ていると、この小さな島にも染めの記憶が静かに息づいているように感じます。
その葉を少しだけ摘み、空気と反応させて色を写してみると、思いがけず深く、やさしい青が現れました。
それは、土地の風や光が宿ったような青で、私にとって特別な色となりました。
